Hear the Word project

Hear the Word projectMANNA HEAR WORD

Millions of South Africans are functionally illiterate and cannot read. The Bible Listening Programme makes the complete Bible available in audio format in all 11 official South African languages for those who prefer to listen to the Word of God.

Every donation of R100 we receive enables us to distribute one Bible.

But Jesus answered, “Rather, how happy are those who hear the word of God and obey it!” Luke 11:28

A Bible in !Xun

A Bible in !Xun

Xun top

Objective

To translate the complete Bible in !Xun, a San language.

Background
  • Approximately 4 000 San who speak !Xun live in Platfontein, near Kimberley in the Northern Cape. This group is primarily from Angola but they have lived in South Africa for more than 20 years.
  • Furthermore, about 10 000 to 15 000 speakers of this language are still living in Angola and Namibia.
  • The group in Platfontein has a school, a church and a radio station, but not a Bible. Scripture reading is done from the Luchazi Bible (a language of Angola) and Afrikaans. The children, however, no longer understand Luchazi.
  • After thorough research, in co-operation with the Bible Societies of Namibia and Botswana, as well as other Bible translation agencies that operate in the areas where the San live, a decision was made that the Bible Society of South Africa would undertake the translation of the Bible into !Xun.
  • A translation team comprised of three members and a Review Committee of approximately 20 members started the translation in 2018.
  • The three translators have already done separate draft translations (phases 1 and 2) of Genesis to Malachi. The Review Committee had reviewed Genesis and Exodus (phase 3).

Expected impact
  • A Bible will be made available in the heart language of !Xun speakers in South Africa, Angola and Namibia.

How can you help?

A Bible for everyone

2 Million Bibles project

Project top 2MIL ENG  THERMOMETER PROJECT 567px ENG 1711

Objective

To supply two million Bibles, over and above our general annual Bible distribution, as well as two million sets of Bible-based literacy booklets to those in need as part of our bicentenary celebrations in 2020. This will help to alleviate Bible poverty and address the literacy need in our country.

Background
  • Recent research shows that there is a need for 23 million Bibles in South Africa.
  • Many households may have only one Bible and need more for the members of the household. In South Africa, 5% of Christian households do not have a Bible at all.
  • Unemployment is a socio-economic problem worldwide. It is also a major challenge in South Africa, with its national unemployment rate of more than 30%. In some communities, it is as high as 60%. South Africa is among the top 20 countries in the world with the highest unemployment rates.
  • South Africa is among the top 20 countries in the world with the highest unemployment rates. According to the latest figures, 27,2% of the economically active population of South Africa is unemployed.
  • Basic education in South Africa is inadequate. A recent study proved that South Africa is facing a massive literacy problem. The study found that four out of five Grade 4 learners’ reading ability was lower than the internationally recognised benchmark.

Expected impact
  • The Bible is placed in the hands of people who desperately need it, but who are unable to afford it.
  • The power of the Living Word will bring hope and assurance of a brighter future.
  • Children, many of whom come from underprivileged households, will master the necessary reading and writing skills, while also hearing about Jesus and the Bible from an early age.
  • Many children who receive the literacy booklets come from families where the parents cannot read either. The children take their booklets home and may teach their parents to read.

How can you help?

R200 000 000 is needed to fund this project that runs until October 2021. Every R100 received will help to distribute one Bible plus a set of two Bible-based literacy booklets.
