Bible-based literacy project

Bible-based literacy project

Literacy top

Objective

The purpose of this project is to promote basic literacy, as well as Bible literacy, especially among children in the foundation phases of education through Bible-based literacy material.

Background
  • Thousands of children in poor areas are not exposed to literacy in the same way as privileged children and they often start their school careers at a disadvantage.
  • After thorough research, the Bible Society developed Bible-based literacy material to promote basic reading and writing skills.
  • The three booklets, My first Bible Do and Learn Book, My 2nd Bible Do and Learn Book and My 3rd Bible Do and Learn Book are now available in all 11 official languages.
  • Various schools make the material available with the approval of foundation phase divisions of education departments. It is also used in pre-primary schools and even Sunday schools.
  • Any person who can read can, with the help of the accompanying manual and flashcards, help others to master these basic skills.
  • Suitable partners (churches, organisations and individuals) help with the implementation of the project.
  • The booklets are made available free of charge to schools and groups that cannot afford it. In 2019, some 170 495 booklets were distributed. This means that thousands of children have had access to these materials.

Expected impact
  • While children, some who come from underprivileged households, master the necessary reading and writing skills, they will also hear about Jesus and the Bible from an early age.
  • Many children who receive the booklets come from families where the parents cannot read either. The children take their booklets home and may teach their parents to read.

How can you help?

Every R100 received will ensure that enough copies of the literacy material are made available free of charge in 2021.

Bibles for Grade 7 learners

Bibles for Grade 7 learners

Gr7 top

Objective

To make Bibles available free of charge to Grade 7 learners in schools in the poorest parts of our country.

Background
  • According to the latest available statistics, there are more than one million Grade 7 learners in schools in South Africa, the vast majority of whom are in state schools.
  • Grade 7 learners are the target group for this project because they can read with understanding. They are at the start of their teenage years and are easily influenced. The biblical message can help to establish a value system which will assist them in making the right choices.
  • The project is managed in a responsible manner. Churches and Christian organisations are particularly used to identify the schools in need of Bibles. Each child also receives a booklet Help! How should I read my Bible?.
  • In 2020, 32 432 Grade 7 learners, in schools mainly in poor areas of our country, received a Bible of their own.

Expected impact
  • The living message of the Word can help to anchor these children in their faith.
  • It will help churches and Christian organisations that work with these children, as more children will have Bibles.
  • For some of these children, the Bible they receive is the only Bible in the home.

How can you help?

Every R100 received will help to make a Bible and a copy of the booklet Help! How should I read my Bible? to Grade 7 learners who cannot afford one of their own.

Khwedam Bible translation

Khwedam Bible translation

Khwedam 2

Objective

To translate the complete Bible into Khwedam.

Background
  • Despite more than 5,6 billion people having access to the Bible in their languages worldwide, many of the smaller ones still do not. The mandate of Bible Societies worldwide is to provide complete Bibles to all communities in their heart language.
  • The South African government has also expressed a need to develop languages in the country, especially indigenous ones. Khwedam, spoken by some of the people in the Northern Cape, is one of these languages.
  • This translation will not only serve the people in the Northern Cape - much like our !Xun translation which started in 2018 - but also those further afield in Botswana and Namibia. After discussions with various Bible Societies and other Bible translation agencies, a decision was made that the Bible Society of South Africa would undertake the translation of the Bible into Khwedam. This project was started in 2019 and the translators have already done consept translations (phases 1 and 2) of Genesis to Samuel.

Expected impact
  • A Bible will be made available in the heart language of Khwedam speakers in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.

How can you help?

Every R100 received will contribute towards the translation of the Bible into Khwedam.
