The Bible Society aims to promote Bible engagement and literacy through its Read and Learn initiative. This initiative comprises two projects, the Bible-based literacy project and the Bibles for Grade 7 learners project, both aimed specifically at children.

Both these projects have been approved by the South African Revenue Service as Section 18A public benefit activities. Businesses, organisations and trusts that support these projects through their financial contributions can deduct such contributions from their taxable income. Please note that the tax exemption is only applicable to businesses, organisations and trusts and not individual donors.

If you can read, you can learn - literacy enhancement

and distribution

The purpose of this project is to promote basic literacy, as well as Bible literacy, especially among children in the foundation phases of education through Bible-based literacy material.

Three booklets, My first Bible Do and Learn Book, My 2nd Bible Do and Learn Book and My 3rd Bible Do and Learn Book, are available in all 11 South African languages. These booklets are made available free of charge to schools and groups that cannot afford it. Helping children to develop their basic reading and writing abilities will not only help them in their everyday life but will also unlock the Bible for them.

Please note that the tax exemption for this project is only applicable to businesses, organisations and trusts and not individual donors.

Bibles for Grade 7 learners project

Bibles for Grade 7 learners project

The goal of this project is to make Bibles available free of charge to Grade 7 learners in schools in the poorest parts of South Africa.

This project targets Grade 7 learners who can read with understanding and are at the start of their teenage years. It is the hope that the biblical message can establish solid, godly principles in their lives and the necessary convictions to stay true to those principles as they enter high school.
