He hears us whenever we ask him; and since we know this is true, we know also that he gives us what we ask from him. 1 John 5:15

It is early morning Monday, 14 August 2017. Alfred Johnny is standing on the veranda of his home in Regent, a suburb of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. He gazes over the mountain and at the heavy rain that has fallen over the last few days. All of a sudden, he hears a loud noise and sees rocks, water and mud descend from the mountain.

The unthinkable was happening. One whole side of the mountain, Sugar Loaf Mountain, was shifting and engulfing the entire community of Regent. Streams of water, mud and rock destroyed everything in its path and houses in two other areas, Kamayama and Kaningo, were also destroyed.

More than 3 000 people lost their homes due to this disaster and more than 1 000 people died in the mudslide with hundreds who are still missing.

The Bible Society in Sierra Leone was immediately galvanised into action and joined hands with other organisations to reach out to these people. “By reaching out to our countrymen who are deeply traumatised like in the narrative of the Good Samaritan, we serve our Christian mission,” said Christiana Jones, the Executive Secretary of the local Bible Society.

“We want to reach out to all victims of the mudslide and their families; with food, water, mattresses but also with the Bible to help with the spiritual care of our people,” she added. “We would also like to support the emergency relief workers and volunteers. We are dealing with a deeply-traumatised community. We are still busy recovering from a years-long civil war and the Ebola epidemic and now this. In our country, the poor and vulnerable people especially, are suffering immensely,” Christiana said.

The Bible Society in Sierra Leone needs approximately R1,2 million to provide food, mattresses and bedding, water and Bibles to thousands of people who have lost everything. The cost of the 3 000 Bibles that they need urgently, amounts to about R175 000.

The Bible Society of South Africa and other Bible Societies in the world want to join hands with our colleagues in Sierra Leone. Your contribution can help us do just that!

For every R100 received one person will get a meal and a Bible.
