Afrikaans Bible translation

To produce an easily understandable, source text-orientated Afrikaans translation of the Bible which is suitable for public reading and use in church services, as well as for catechism studies, Bible study and privately.

  • This translation will be published as Die Bybel: 'n Direkte Vertaling (The Bible: a direct translation). The abbreviation used is BDV.
  • The translation brief makes it clear that the translation must be a faithful rendering of the meaning of the source texts, as well as of their style and structure. It must be of high literary standard and in good Afrikaans.
  • About 140 people are involved with the translation project, including exegetes, source-text experts, Afrikaans linguists and literary experts.
  • The project comprises five phases: The New Testament has been completed up to and including phase 3, the Old Testament is in phase 2 and 97% has been completed. The Deuterocanonical books are virtually completed up to phase 3 at 99%. It is projected that the translation will be finalised by mid-2019 in order that the Bible be published by the end of 2020.
  • The translation has its own website at where a number books of the Bible are available for comment.

Expected impact
  • This translation will address a very specific need, namely for a Bible translation that is more strongly aligned to the source texts (that is to say the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek) than the existing translations.
  • Many believers will receive a Bible that is as close to the source texts as possible, yet still easily understandable.
